The Project Manager may perform audits as a self-check, or they may be performed by a third party. There are four types of audits mentioned in the <em>PMBOK<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><em> Guide <\/em>\u2013 Sixth Edition, and each one reviews specific processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Quality audits<\/strong> review the entire project\u2019s use of planned processes \u2013 a general audit, performed as part of the Manage Quality process, examining all the processes used in a project at a high level.<\/li><li><strong>Risk audits<\/strong> review the use of risk processes to manage risks that might affect the project and its outcomes.<\/li><li><strong>Procurement audits<\/strong> review the procurement processes, or how you will acquire goods or services needed to accomplish your project.<\/li><li><strong>Configuration audits<\/strong> review the project\u2019s configuration processes: how the team defines, manages, and executes the deliverable\u2019s key specifications and assets.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Project management quality audits are meant to help improve processes, which involves finding problems and identifying best practices at a systemic level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inspections\">What are inspections in project management?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While audits are higher-level and forward-looking, project management inspections look back at what has already been done. This may include finished deliverables or assets, goods, and services procured during the project. Inspections are used in three processes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Control Quality<\/strong>: inspecting or testing the deliverable to verify it meets the quality requirements.<\/li><li><strong>Control Procurements<\/strong>: the project manager or team verifies the vendor\u2019s work product meets requirements and acceptance criteria.<\/li><li><strong>Validate Scope<\/strong>: the project\u2019s customer or sponsor validates the project\u2019s deliverables meet requirements and acceptance criteria.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>PMBOK<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><em> Guide<\/em> states inspections include \u201cactivities such as measuring, examining, and validating to determine whether work and deliverables meet requirements and product acceptance criteria.\u201d During an inspection, project managers must review the completeness of a project or its components and verify that requirements and product acceptance criteria have been met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"difference\">Difference between audit and inspection PMP explanation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As used in the <em>PMBOK<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><em> Guide<\/em>, an audit reviews processes, whereas inspection is used to review a work product. Let\u2019s look at some other differences between audits and inspections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Quality audits have a different <em>purpose<\/em> from inspections.<ul><li>Audits are used to improve processes or products. PMP credential holders can perform inspections and audits, but it may be necessary to establish an internal or third-party inspection or audit team in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspections and audits are crucial components of successful project management and are usually required by one or more project stakeholders. They have many uses in analyzing risk, controlling procurement, verifying compliance, and much more.
