This is one of the challenges of project management, that you cannot depend on your place in the hierarchy or your title to convince others to follow your lead in reaching the desired business outcome. Influence is the way the most successful of project managers are able to navigate organizational structures and motivate team members. Being able to lead with influence towards positive outcomes can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/ecpe\/leading-outside-your-authority\/\">help project managers to reach formal leadership roles<\/a>. These influencers have never met the thousands of people who are making financial decisions based on their social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same dynamic of a network of people who are looking to one person who has no real authority but whose option matters to them is exactly what \u201cinfluence\u201d means in the business context. To lead with influence, that is from an informal position, is to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/ecpe\/leading-outside-your-authority\/\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">\u2026get others to follow you and act willingly, rather than acting because you\u2019re their boss and tell them to<\/span><\/a>.\u201d How you lead others when in fact you have no power over their role is part of leading with influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent40.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/Leading%20with%20Influence%201.png\" alt=\"Leading with Influence 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Why-Project-Managers-need-influence\">Why Project Managers need influence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who leverage leadership skills to develop professional networks within and beyond their organization can influence others to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/ecpe\/leading-outside-your-authority\/\">get the job done more easily<\/a>.\u201d In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/simon_sinek_why_good_leaders_make_you_feel_safe?language=ka\">Simon Sinek\u2019s TED Talk, <em>Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe<\/em><\/a>, he shares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent40.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/Leading%20with%20Influence%202.png\" alt=\"Leading with Influence 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201c\u2026Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank. I know many people at the senior most levels of organizations who are absolutely not leaders. They are authorities, and we do what they say because they have authority over us, but we would not follow them. And I know many people who are at the bottoms of organizations who have no authority and they are absolutely leaders, and this is because they have chosen to look after the person to the left of them, and they have chosen to look after the person to the right of them. It is something that you must be strategic in doing, have patience as it takes time, and know it is continuous. From the Harvard articles, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2008\/02\/exerting-influence-without-aut\"><em>Exerting Influence without Authority<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/ecpe\/leading-outside-your-authority\/\"><em>Leading Outside Your Authority<\/em><\/a>, here are activities that foster influence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent40.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/Leading%20with%20Influence%203.png\" alt=\"Leading with Influence 3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Influence does not happen overnight.
