{"id":303,"date":"2020-12-30T14:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-30T19:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projectmanagementacademy.net\/resources\/?p=303"},"modified":"2021-07-08T13:57:59","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T18:57:59","slug":"do-your-team-members-feel-unsafe-to-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projectmanagementacademy.net\/resources\/blog\/do-your-team-members-feel-unsafe-to-lead\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating Future Leaders: Psychological Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A study by <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/12\/why-capable-people-are-reluctant-to-lead\">HBR.org<\/a> has indirectly found that companies with high levels of Psychological Safety have more successful leaders in the pipeline, suggesting to some experts a causal relationship between these two phenomena and leaving us wondering when we will see this change enacted on all levels within organizations as it is an important factor for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders can build psychological safety by being more inclusive and encouraging participation. Leaders who are receptive to others\u2019 ideas, provide regular feedback on progress, create opportunities for growth with a positive outlook, and highlight success show the ability to build trust in themselves as well as other members of their team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the article by HBR.org, the authors highlighted three key reasons why capable people are reluctant to lead. Laziness or inertia did not make the list, but if we give the Homer Simpson who is in all of us an opportunity to take over, his influence could be a fourth contributor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/28100519\/image-1-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1926\" width=\"327\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/28100519\/image-1-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/28100519\/image-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/28100519\/image-1-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/28100519\/image-1-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/28100519\/image-1-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The three causes of reluctance which were identified are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Interpersonal risk which is the perceived or real fear of damaged relationships with our (former) peers when we are now leading them<\/li><li>Image risk which is the fear that our peers might think badly of us for taking on a leadership role<\/li><li>The risk of being personally blamed if the people we are leading are unable to achieve team goals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What was very surprising to me is that the authors never made any explicit references to psychological safety, and yet that is an effective vaccine to prevent these ailments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/04\/05154613\/7-Secrets-Passing-PMP-Exam-1.png\" alt=\"7 Secrets to Passing the PMP Exam: Leaders\" class=\"wp-image-98\" width=\"402\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/04\/05154613\/7-Secrets-Passing-PMP-Exam-1.png 803w, https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/04\/05154613\/7-Secrets-Passing-PMP-Exam-1-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/e360-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/2021\/04\/05154613\/7-Secrets-Passing-PMP-Exam-1-768x290.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<script>\n\t\t\t\t\t\thbspt.enqueueForm({\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tportalId: 3294842,\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tformId: \"4091cf73-280a-4cd8-be87-aec72cada392\",\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttarget: \"#hbspt-form-1775312158000-2313476932\",\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tregion: \"na1\",\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t});\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/script>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"hbspt-form\" id=\"hbspt-form-1775312158000-2313476932\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the same article, the authors provided some suggestions on how senior leaders can reduce these fears by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Actively encouraging and supporting those junior colleagues who might be reluctant about taking on leadership roles. This could include actions such as publicly recognizing those who were willing to \u201cstep up\u201d.<\/li><li>Demonstrating ways of effectively managing conflict so that these future leaders learn to recognize the differences between task-related, healthy conflicts and relationship-oriented, unhealthy ones. This will help staff to become less worried about how to handle the team conflicts which they will inevitably face.<\/li><li>Reducing the probability of failure by finding low risk opportunities for staff to lead.
