A common model is the \u201cmatrixed\u201d organization, in which employees have both departmental and functional managers. In a matrixed organizational structure, an employee has a primary manager plus one or more&nbsp;project managers&nbsp;they work under, and skills are the driving factor. To understand the matrix, you must also know of the \u201cfunctional\u201d approach in which employees are organized by the work output type, such as marketing, R&amp;D, and finance. Project Managers may not be saving all of humanity from an evil software program like Neo, but they do need to make choices and navigate complicated situations. You need to know the different in matrix and functional organizations because it directly impacts how project teams are formed, supported, and work is tracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent40.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/PM%20Matrix%20Org%201.png\" alt=\"PM Matrix Org 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent40.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/PM%20Matrix%20Org%202.png\" alt=\"PM Matrix Org 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Search for the word \u201cmatrix\u201d in the Project Management Institute (PMI.org) database, and you\u2019ll find search results from 1977, 1985, 1992, 2006, and beyond; the concept is not new and in fact, is more prevalent today than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Why-Matrix-Organizational-Structure-Impacts-Project-Managers\">Why Matrix Organizational Structure Impacts Project Managers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The formation and permanence of a team has a direct impact on how a Project Management can guide the work. The matrix setting allows \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusiness.chron.com\/advantages-disadvantages-matrix-organizational-structures-business-organizations-26350.html\">for impermanent project structures that co-existed with relatively permanent functional structures<\/a>\u201d which allows for timely response to business needs and also means that every <a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusiness.chron.com\/advantages-disadvantages-matrix-organizational-structures-business-organizations-26350.html\">team member has at minimum two managers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work assignments and priorities given by the project manager in the Matrix structure are driven by the project itself, not the organization. The project manager is focused on the goals, budget, timeline, and resources within the context of the project. However, the functional managers can also make assignments to the same employees who are on project teams.
