Those same business drivers are embedded in the emerging area of Disciplined Agile (DA) which has continued to grow since it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplinedagileconsortium.org\/disciplined-agile-faq\">2012 inception at IBM<\/a>. In fact, The <a href=\"https:\/\/disciplinedagileconsortium.org\/disciplined-agile-faq\">Disciplined Agile (DA) toolkit became part of the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI) in August 2019<\/a>, and with that, <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalitychicago.com\/blog\/the-impact-of-pmis-acquisition-of-disciplined-agile\/\">4000 DA credential holders<\/a> became part of PMI. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalitychicago.com\/blog\/the-impact-of-pmis-acquisition-of-disciplined-agile\/\">interview with Ambler<\/a> about the PMI acquisition of DA, he shared that the toolkit is agnostic pulling from Scrum, XP, RUP, Kanban, Lean Startup and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"scaling-methods\">Where Disciplined Agile Stands Within Scaling Methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofagile.com\/#ufh-i-521251909-13th-annual-state-of-agile-report\/473508\">2019, DAD is ranked higher<\/a> than the older Lean Management approach in Scaling Agile methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 500px; display: block; margin: 0px auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/What%20is%20Disciplined%20Agile%201.png\" alt=\"What is Disciplined Agile 1\" width=\"500\"><em>Figure 1 13th Annual State of Agile Report<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has continued to grow in use in each year of the international State of Agile research report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-disciplined-agile\">What is Disciplined Agile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DA is not a methodology in the way that Kanban or Scrum are. It is a tool kit that pulls from across Agile resources to provide true business agility possibilities for the enterprise. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/disciplined-agile\">official definition of DA<\/a> from the Project Management Institute\u2019s (PMI) states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/What%20is%20Disciplined%20Agile%202.png\" alt=\"What is Disciplined Agile 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The founders noted that there are 6 scaling factors and list those in their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/disciplinedagileconsortium.org\/Resources\/Documents\/DADCrosstalk201311.pdf\">Foundation for Scaling Agile<\/a>\u201d white paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 363px; display: block; margin: 0px auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3294842\/What%20is%20Disciplined%20Agile%203.png\" alt=\"What is Disciplined Agile 3\" width=\"363\">Figure 2 Process Scaling Factors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/disciplinedagileconsortium.org\/Resources\/Documents\/DADCrosstalk201311.pdf\">Ambler and Lines\u2019 describe DAD<\/a> as an Agile framework that \u201c\u2026strives to provide a coherent, end-to-end strategy for how agile solution delivery works in practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"who-should-pursue\">Who Should Pursue Disciplined Agile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For those familiar with the PMI\u2019s Project Management Body of Knowledge (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/pmbok-guide-standards\/foundational\/pmbok\">PMBOK<\/a>), the DAD is of a similar vein as it \u201c\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/vitalitychicago.com\/blog\/the-impact-of-pmis-acquisition-of-disciplined-agile\/\">represents a soup to nuts approach to agility<\/a> and even more\u2026\u201d In the official introduction to DAD, the PMI explains that part of the business value of DAD is it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/disciplined-agile\/introduction-to-disciplined-agile\">enables connections of work<\/a> across \u201cFinance, Portfolio Management, Solution Delivery (software development), IT Operations, Enterprise Architecture, Vendor Management and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those seeking to realize business value across workstreams, including but not limited to Business Leaders, Project Managers and Agile Practitioners, will benefit from learning the DAD toolkit. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact and change how businesses manage work, build teams, and monitor productivity, business agility is critical. And business agility is the founding concepts behind Disciplined Agile Delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"get-started\">How to Get Started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you get overwhelmed by the 20+ books on DAD or make any announcements that existing Agile practices are on the way out at your company, continue to build your knowledge of what DAD is. A great starting point is hearing from the founders themselves via their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/disciplinedagileconsortium.org\/Resources\/Documents\/DADCrosstalk201311.pdf\">Foundation for Scaling Agile<\/a>\u201d white paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofagile.com\/#ufh-i-521251909-13th-annual-state-of-agile-report\/473508\">13<sup>th<\/sup> Annual State of Agile Survey<\/a> reported that the top three responses for the most valuable help for agile practices are: \u201cInternal agile coaches\u201d, \u201cExecutive sponsorship\u201d, and \u201c<strong>Company-provided training<\/strong>\u201d. To that end, pursue training from proven vendors such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/projectmanagementacademy.net\/dasm-certification\">Disciplined Agile: Foundations of Agile<\/a> virtual class. It&#8217;s a practical course that teaches you how to implement agile practices in your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strategic approach to your team\u2019s Agile training will have a more positive outcome. One of the best ways to make sure that your team is successful with Agile is by providing a training session that&#8217;s accessible to everyone.
